Details of Travel to Japan, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Afghanistan, and United Kingdom, October 1-14, 2013
Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to Tokyo, Japan; Bali, Indonesia; Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Kabul, Afghanistan; and London, (England) United Kingdom, October 1-14, 2013.
In Tokyo, October 2-3, Secretary Kerry joined Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel for the U.S.-Japan Security Consultative Committee (SCC) meeting. The last SCC was held in June 2011 in Washington, DC. The meeting represents the next step in further strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance, providing an opportunity to build on our already broad and comprehensive bilateral relationship.
On October 4, Secretary Kerry continued on to Bali, Indonesia for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Ministerial Meeting (AMM) and other APEC-related meetings. APEC is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade, and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. Promoting trade and investment in the Asia Pacific remains a key component of the U.S. rebalance policy. The Secretary participated in a broad range of multilateral and bilateral meetings with officials from APEC member economies.
Secretary Kerry then traveled to Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei for the U.S.-ASEAN Summit (fifth U.S.-ASEAN Leaders Meeting), and the East Asia Summit, October 9-10. Engagement in the region’s multilateral architecture is central to the Obama Administration’s rebalance to Asia. While there, Secretary Kerry also participated in a series of bilateral meetings.
In Malaysia on October 10-11, Secretary Kerry met with Malaysian officials to highlight our growing bilateral ties with Malaysia, and attended the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. Now in its fourth year, the Global Entrepreneurship Summit is an initiative President Obama announced in 2009 to spur job creation through entrepreneurship by connecting young innovators to resources, ideas, and each other.
Secretary Kerry visited Kabul, Afghanistan on October 11 to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Secretary Kerry traveled October 12-14 to London, U.K.
