On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate all Spaniards as they celebrate the 81st anniversary of La Fiesta Nacional de España on October 12.

The United States and Spain are bound by ties of history, by mutual respect, by common values and interests, and by a shared understanding of the importance of partnerships and diplomacy in addressing the world’s most complex challenges. Today, that firm foundation unites us in confronting virtually every issue facing our nations and our planet—from promoting economic growth that is shared and sustainable, to combating the threat of climate change, to responding to the refugee crisis, to countering violent extremism wherever it threatens the lives of our citizens and our fellow human beings across the globe.

In the year since I last visited Spain, our collaboration has only grown, always strengthened by the rich cultural connections between our countries and peoples, and by the aspirations we hold for greater peace and prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic.

It is with that spirit of cooperation and friendship in mind that I wish the people of Spain a joyous celebration as they observe La Fiesta Nacional de España.
