On the Occasion of Italy's Republic Day

On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I extend my best wishes to the people of Italy on your Republic Day.

The United States and Italy share a strong bond, dating back to the close friendship between Thomas Jefferson and Filippo Mazzei, the Italian merchant and surgeon who settled near Jefferson’s Monticello. Thousands of visitors each day marvel at Constantino Brumidi’s monumental Apotheosis of Washington fresco that adorns the interior of our treasured Capitol rotunda. And every year, millions of American students explore the classic works of Virgil, Dante, and Boccaccio. The ties between our peoples and our countries have flourished over the centuries and have made our partnership an exceptional one.

Today, we are building on that heritage by working together closely to safeguard European security as NATO allies, defeat violent extremism, restore stability to the Middle East, curb climate change, and build shared prosperity.

On this special day, I offer you my warmest congratulations and look forward to continuing a long relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation for years to come.
