Ethiopia's National Day

Press Statement

May 27, 2016

On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the people of Ethiopia as you celebrate your national day on May 28.

Ethiopia has faced enormous challenges this year, but has continued to demonstrate leadership on development in Africa. While confronting the worst drought in 50 years, you have continued to fight poverty while, at the same time, hosting nearly three quarters of a million refugees from nearby countries who are seeking security from conflict. You remain among the top troop contributing countries to international peacekeeping missions and have made lasting contributions to the peace process in South Sudan. The American people value their friendship with you and are proud of the many men and women of Ethiopian heritage who live in the United States.

On this joyous day, I wish all Ethiopians prosperity and happiness in the year ahead.
