On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I extend my warmest congratulations to the people of Chad as you commemorate 55 years of independence on August 11.

I applaud Chad’s leadership in the fight against Boko Haram and recognize the great sacrifices made by the Chadian people to protect your borders and to fight back against the scourge of violent extremism.  The United States values its strong relationship with the government and people of Chad and looks forward to working closely with you on mutually important issues in the year ahead.  In addition to the struggle against violent extremism, these issues include economic development, the protection of refugees, support for human rights, environmental conservation, and regional stability.

I wish all the people of Chad a festive and joyous National Day and look forward to continuing our close partnership as we strive to create a peaceful and more prosperous future for all.
