On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am pleased to send congratulations and best wishes to the people of Fiji as you celebrate the 44th anniversary of your nation’s independence this October 10.

The United States values its relationship with Fiji. Our citizens share a mutual commitment to democracy, freedom, and rule of law. We commend the recent successful elections in Fiji and look forward to continuing to build and strengthen our friendship as we work together to promote peace, security, and economic development.

As you celebrate this special day, know that you have the support of the American people. We stand by you as you continue to build a freer and more democratic society. Best wishes for a year filled with peace, progress and prosperity.
