Video Recording for the Republic of Korea's Independence Day
Secretary of State
On behalf of President Obama and the American people, it’s my great pleasure to congratulate the Korean people as you celebrate the anniversary of your independence this August 15th.
The story of the Republic of Korea is an inspiration to people everywhere, including here in the United States.
In the last 60 years, the Republic of Korea has become a vibrant democracy and global economic powerhouse. I saw that firsthand when I came to Seoul earlier this year and I visited with the Korean people. And people in every corner of the world can see it, as the “Korean Wave” spreads Korean culture to countries near and far.
Over the last 60 years, we have built one of the strongest partnerships on the planet. And the United States is proud to be your steadfast ally.
But our alliance is not only rooted in shared history. It is strengthened every day by our citizens who work hand-in-hand to build a better future on both sides of the Pacific. It’s strengthened by the Korean students who study on our shores, and the American students who study in Seoul or in Busan; it’s strengthened by American and Korean entrepreneurs who work together to promote economic growth in both of our countries; and it is strengthened by our service members, who conduct joint exercises and stand together to uphold peace and stability in the Asia Pacific region.
As you celebrate your independence this year, the United States proudly stands with you as an ally, as a partner, and as a friend. I send you my heartfelt congratulations to the Korean people around the world on this special day.
Congratulations.
