U.S. Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa Thomas Perriello departed on June 5 for a trip to Europe that includes stops in London, U.K.; Rome, Italy; and Brussels, Belgium. The trip is focused on meeting with partners to discuss pressing concerns about the crisis in Burundi and international support for the East African Community (EAC)-led mediation efforts under former Tanzanian President Mkapa’s facilitation. Additionally, the Envoy will raise U.S. concerns about the ongoing electoral delays and the closing of political space in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

In particular, the Special Envoy will meet with important interlocutors in Europe, including Congolese stakeholders, to discuss ongoing efforts by former Togolese Prime Minister Edem Kodjo to bring Congolese stakeholders together to reach a political consensus on the electoral process moving forward. He will also discuss with key regional and international interlocutors next steps to support the Burundi dialogue process and will encourage all stakeholders to actively and fully participate in the dialogue without conditions or redlines.
