Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken will deliver remarks at the opening reception for the Turquoise Mountain: Artists Transforming Afghanistan Exhibition at the Smithsonian Freer and Sackler Galleries at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 14. Dr. Julian Raby, Director of the Freer and Sackler Galleries of Art; Shoshana Stewart, CEO of Turquoise Mountain; USAID Assistant to the Administrator Larry Sampler; Afghan Ambassador to the United States Hamdullah Mohib; and the Afghan Minister of Information and Culture Abdul Bari Jahani, will also deliver remarks. Deputy Secretary Blinken will also be joined by Ambassador Richard Olson, Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Michael McKinley.

The Turquoise Mountain exhibition, first announced during Afghan President Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah’s visit to Washington in March 2015, opened to the public on March 5 and will run through January 2017. The exhibition portrays the transformation of the Old City district of Murad Khani in Kabul, from ruins to a thriving center for the revival of Afghan arts and culture. The exhibition highlights the U.S. Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting Afghan arts and cultural preservation, and is made possible by support for Turquoise Mountain from USAID and other donors.
