Secretary Kerry's Call With President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition
The following is attributable to Spokesperson John Kirby:
Secretary Kerry spoke today via telephone with the President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, Khaled Khoja.
The Secretary and Khoja discussed the results of Saturday's meeting in Vienna of the International Syria Support Group and of the importance of next steps -- including a broad and inclusive gathering of the Syrian opposition, the beginning as soon as practicable of credible negotiations under UN auspices between the Syrian opposition and the regime, and steps to put in place a credible ceasefire.
The Secretary emphasized the importance of the Syrian opposition coming together to ensure that they can participate actively and meaningfully in the negotiations. And he stressed the need for maximum access by humanitarian organizations and desperately needed food, water, medicine and other relief supplies.
The Secretary and Khoja agreed on the urgent need to end the suffering the Syrian people and see Syria emerge from the civil war whole, unified, pluralistic and led by a government free of Asad and responsive to the needs of the Syrian people.
