The State Department Welcomes the Signing of a Letter of Intent Between Noble Energy, Other Leviathan Partners, and National Electric Power Company of Jordan
The State Department welcomes the September 3 signing of a Letter of Intent between the U.S. firm Noble Energy, the other Leviathan Partners, and the National Electric Power Company of Jordan for the supply of natural gas from the Eastern Mediterranean to Jordan. Acting Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs Amos Hochstein represented the United States at the signing ceremony, which was hosted by U.S. Ambassador to Jordan Alice Wells.
The State Department facilitated talks between the parties leading to an agreement signed in February between Noble Energy, Jordan’s Arab Potash Company and U.S.-affiliated Jordan Bromine Company.
The United States continues to believe that energy can be an important tool to enhance regional stability and cooperation. This Letter of Intent marks the beginning of the second phase of the project, and represents an important step towards promoting peace and prosperity in the Middle East by encouraging collaboration to overcome energy challenges. It also follows similar deals with companies in Egypt, Jordan and the West Bank. Once concluded, it is expected to save Jordan around $1.5 billion per year and give Jordan greater energy security.
