Washington, DC
October 30, 2013

Secretary of State John Kerry will participate via video teleconference in a panel discussion on transforming the relationship between government and civil society as part of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Annual Summit, taking place in London, on October 31.

The panel will be moderated by British journalist and writer Rageh Omar, and include leaders from OGP multilateral partner organizations. More than 1,000 delegates from more than 61 countries will come together in London from October 31 to November 1, 2013 for the Summit.

The delegates – including representatives from civil society organizations, businesses and governments – will share experiences from their respective countries and provide real examples of how openness can improve public services, drive economic growth, reduce poverty and corruption, and restore public faith in government.

OGP is a multilateral, multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at securing concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, increase civic participation, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to make government more open, effective, and accountable.

OGP was formally launched in September 2011 when eight founding governments – Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom, and United States – endorsed an Open Government Declaration, and published national OGP action plans with specific open government reform commitments.

In just two years, an additional 53 countries have joined the partnership. The leadership of OGP includes an equal number of governments and civil society organizations.

On the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Obama issued a call to action for governments to stand with civil society and help protect civic space, a pledge already made by signatories to OGP’s founding declaration.

The Secretary’s remarks will begin at 1:30 p.m. EST and will be live streamed at
