Ambassador Melanne S. Verveer Travels to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Poland, and Ukraine

Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues, Melanne Verveer, will travel to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Poland, and Ukraine November 2-12 to promote gender equality and the advancement of women in the region. While in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 2-5, and in Tbilisi Georgia, from November 6-7, Ambassador Verveer will meet with government officials and civil society activists to discuss the major challenges facing women in the Caucasus and how the United States can help to support women’s empowerment throughout these countries. She will also meet with women leaders active in peace efforts in the region.

Ambassador Verveer will continue on to Warsaw, Poland, November 8 to deliver remarks at the launch of the third Invest for the Future Conference, a U.S-sponsored regional initiative to expand women’s economic participation and strengthen female entrepreneurs through networks, increased cooperation, training, and coordinated economic development. Invest for the Future will bring together female business owners from Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus as well as past participants from Southeastern Europe.

She will then travel to Kyiv and Lviv, Ukraine from November 9-12 to meet with a range of government officials and civil society leaders to discuss the importance of women’s participation at all levels of society, as well as broader political issues. On November 12, while in Lviv, Ambassador Verveer will deliver a speech at Ukrainian Catholic University.

Ambassador Verveer returns to Washington, DC on November 13, 2012.
