Senior Advisor for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies Dr. Tomicah Tillemann Travels to Peru and El Salvador

Dr. Tomicah Tillemann, Senior Advisor for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies, will travel to Lima, Peru from October 14 to October 16, 2012, to represent the United States during the World Movement for Democracy Seventh Assembly Conference.

The Assembly will convene activists, practitioners, academics and policymakers from around the world to discuss strategies for advancing democracy worldwide. The theme of this year’s Assembly is “Democracy for All: Ensuring Political, Social and Economic Inclusion.” The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is organizing the Assembly, which will include over 500 democracy activists and international leaders.

On October 18, Dr. Tillemann will travel to San Salvador, El Salvador to meet with government and civil society leaders in preparation for El Salvador’s upcoming presidency of the Community of Democracies (CD). Dr. Tillemann will be joined by Ambassador Maria Leissner, Secretary General of the CD, and leaders from civil society for discussions with El Salvador’s Foreign Minister and other senior officials.

The Community of Democracies is an intergovernmental organization of democracies and democratizing countries established in 2000 with a stated commitment to strengthening and deepening democratic norms and practices worldwide. The CD supports democratic transition and consolidation worldwide by assisting democracies in the development and strengthening of institutions, and promoting and enabling civil society in all countries by creating a network of government representatives, civil society, youth, and private business.
