The Department of State is saddened to learn of the passing of former Ambassador Harry G. Barnes, Jr. During an exceptionally distinguished career, Mr. Barnes served as Director General of the Foreign Service as well as Ambassador to Chile, India, and Romania. Harry Barnes embodied what an American diplomat should be. He skillfully and effectively furthered United States interests and values, especially our abiding interest in the spread of democracy and respect for human rights throughout the world. With both personal and professional courage, he effectively pushed for democratic change during the repressive regimes of Augusto Pinochet in Chile and Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania. We extend our condolences to his family.
