The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and Brooklyn Academy of Music announce today the four American dance companies selected to represent the United States in the third season of DanceMotion USASM. The program sends American dance companies overseas to connect with audiences and communities, especially underserved youth, through dance workshops, lecture demonstrations, public performances and other arts education activities.

DanceMotion USASM builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power” diplomacy, which embraces the full use of diplomatic tools, in this case dance, to engage people and create opportunities for greater understanding.

The following dance companies will tour as part of the third season of DanceMotion USASM:

  • Doug Varone and Dancers (based in New York, NY) will tour in Argentina, Paraguay, and Peru
  • Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (based in Chicago, IL) will tour in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia
  • llstyle and Peace Productions (based in Philadelphia, PA) will tour in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine
  • Spectrum Dance Theater (based in Seattle, WA) will tour in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka

DanceMotion USASM is a two-way cultural diplomacy program that reflects the diversity and expertise of the American dance community. The program includes a U.S-based exchange, which brings a foreign dance company to present collaborative workshops and performances with an American dance company in the United States. During season three, a South American dance ensemble will come to the U.S. to collaborate with Doug Varone and Dancers.

DanceMotion USASM is a public-private partnership with the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Additional sponsors include the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation.
