Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero to Travel to Nigeria February 28 to March 3
Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero will travel to Nigeria from February 28 to March 3 to discuss the promotion of democratic institutions and processes, Nigeria’s role in regional affairs and global issues related to peace, security, and stability.
During her visit, Under Secretary Otero will engage with senior Nigerian officials, electoral observation organization representatives, and civil society groups to discuss efforts to create an environment for transparent and credible Nigerian general elections in April. She will meet with the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to discuss the organization’s work within the region and address greater youth participation in civil society and democratic processes. Under Secretary Otero will also meet with representatives of the Northern Governors Forum and discuss conflict resolution efforts to address sectarian violence.
As Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, Maria Otero oversees the bureaus of Population, Refugees and Migration; Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs; the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons; and the Office of the Science and Technology Advisor. She also serves as the Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. Under Secretary Otero co-chairs the U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission Transparency and Integrity (GTI) Working Group; this will be her third visit to Nigeria since May 2010.
