Department Hosts Conference Series to Address Key International Security Issues
The Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN) in conjunction with the Bureau of Public Affairs is hosting a conference series entitled “Nonproliferation Outlook ” to raise awareness and promote understanding of key international security-related U.S. Government policies and programs. Participants and panelists will include both Government and nongovernmental organization (NGO) representatives.
On November 29, the first such conference, on ‘Nuclear Security,’ used the April 2010 Nuclear Security Summit as a point of departure to discuss recent efforts by the U.S. Government, with the support of NGOs, to secure vulnerable nuclear materials and address illicit trafficking of them. Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, the Coordinator for Threat Reduction Programs, served as keynote speaker.
The second conference, scheduled for January 12, 2011, will address efforts taken by the U.S. and other governments to implement strong export controls through a variety of programs and initiatives, including UN Security Council Resolution 1540 and the U.S. Export Control and Related Border Security Program. The conference will also feature a discussion on the relationship between export controls and development, and on the significance of export controls for nonproliferation.
The third conference, scheduled for February 24, 2011, will address peaceful applications of nuclear energy. The discussion will focus on U.S. contributions toward the International Atomic Energy Agency’s technical cooperation fund through the Peaceful Uses Initiative, and the ways in which such assistance supports development objectives
To close this series, the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, in close cooperation with the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance and the Bureau of Public Affairs, will host a conference on March 30, 2011, focusing on engaging youth on nonproliferation and disarmament issues. This will be the second annual event focused on engaging such an audience.
