Bombings in Abuja, Nigeria

Press Statement

The United States condemns the bombings that took place this morning in Abuja, Nigeria, which attempted to mar the celebration of 50 years of independence. We express our condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Nigeria on what should be a joyous occasion.

As Nigeria casts its eyes forward to new elections and a reaffirmation of democratic values, it is unfortunate that there remain those who would resort to violence at this critical time. Violence has no place in political discourse.
