Assistant Secretary Shapiro Travels to the Republic of Korea and Japan

Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew J. Shapiro will travel to the Republic of Korea and Japan July 20-23, 2010.

From July 20-21 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will meet with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and U.S. Army General Walter “Skip” Sharp, Commander of U.S. Forces Korea.

From July 22-23, in Tokyo, Japan, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will lead the U.S. delegation at the first plenary session for negotiations on the U.S.-Japan Host Nation Support agreement and meet with U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Edward A. Rice, Jr., Commander of U.S. Forces Japan.

Currently estimated at $4.3 billion per year, Host Nation Support is an important measure of Japan’s commitment to promoting regional security in partnership with the United States. These funds also represent significant investment in Japan’s economy in the form of rents, salaries, and services.
