United States and Organization of the Islamic Conference to Co-Sponsor Event on Polio Eradication

On December 2, 2009, the United States and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will co-sponsor a panel discussion entitled “Joining Forces to Eradicate Polio.” This event will take place at UNICEF Headquarters (Three United Nations Plaza, New York City) from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. This event will be open to the press.

The discussion will focus on current initiatives and lingering challenges to the final and complete eradication of polio, and reinforces the commitment expressed by President Obama in his Cairo speech to work with the OIC toward that end.

Featured speakers will include UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman, U.S. Representative to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations Ambassador Frederick D. Barton, and Ambassador to the Permanent Observer Mission of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to the United Nations in New York Abdul Wahab.

Dr. William Foege, Senior Fellow at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will moderate the panel. Panel participants will include Dr. Bruce Aylward, Director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative at the World Health Organization; Mr. Jim Lacy, Chair of Rotary International’s Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for the United States; and Mr. Raza Tarar, Minister, Pakistan Mission to the United Nations.
