United States - Ecuador Bilateral Dialogue
The range of issues discussed highlighted the depth and breadth of bilateral relations between the United States and Ecuador. The meeting followed a day of technical discussions between the two delegations on November 9, hosted by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, under the auspices of the U.S.-Ecuador Trade and Investment Council (TIC). It was the first such meeting since the creation of the TIC 11 years ago.
Ecuadorian Undersecretary for Bilateral Affairs Jorge Orbe led his country’s delegation, while Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas Shannon headed the U.S. team. Both delegation heads directed working groups to follow up on the matters discussed during the plenary session – with the aim of strengthening ties and identifying areas of potential cooperation. The first plenary session of the Bilateral Dialogue took place in Quito, Ecuador, in November 2008.
The participants stressed the importance of a constructive process that includes regular exchanges at future meetings of the Bilateral Dialogue.
