Today, we are pleased to recognize World Environment Day and highlight the important work done by the United Nations Environment Programme to raise awareness of the environmental challenges facing our planet. Since 1972, WED has played a pivotal role in educating and empowering individuals to take action to produce a cleaner and safer environment. Today’s theme, “Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change,” underscores that climate change is quintessentially a global problem that requires a truly global solution. The Obama administration has declared climate change a “clear and present danger,” and it is committed to meeting this challenge head on. The United States will continue to develop and implement robust actions at home while seeking strong international agreements abroad to combat this global crisis. In addition to government leadership, it is critical that we take actions in our communities across the U.S. and around the world. This is a fight we cannot afford to lose.
