Hermen Yee is a public diplomacy cone FSO, enroute to his first post as consular officer in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He is currently attending Spanish language training at FSI.

Hermen was an enlisted active duty U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman assigned to Naval Hospital, Beaufort, S.C., and then was a reservist with 1st Marine Air Wing while attending California State University, Los Angeles. He received his BS in business administration (finance) in 1983 from California State Univ., Los Angeles, and then earned his JD from Rutgers Univ. School of Law, Camden, N.J. in 1986. He is a licensed attorney in N.J. (1987) and MA (1996) bars, and admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court (2009).

Hermen completed a judicial clerkship with the Camden County Superior Court, N.J., and then was an enforcement attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in LA, CA.

From 1990-1997, Hermen was an active duty commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps (“JAGC”), and served as:

(1) Legal Assistance Attorney and Trial Counsel (prosecutor) with U.S. Marine Corps attorneys, 3rd Force Service Support Group in Okinawa, Japan;

(2) Staff Judge Advocate (“SJA”) (in-house attorney), 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, South Korea, (Exercise Valiant Blitz);

(3) Deputy SJA, USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), forward-deployed aircraft carrier in Yokosuka, Japan; and

(4) Instructor, Naval Justice School (“NJS”), Newport, RI.

From 1997-2008, Hermen continued with the JAGC in a reservist capacity as:

(1) Instructor, NJS, Newport, RI;

(2) Deputy SJA, Iceland Defense Force, Joint Reserve Unit, Devens, MA;

(3) Executive Officer/Instructor, Defense Institute of International Legal Studies, Newport, RI;

(4) Administrative Officer/Instructor, NJS, Newport, RI; and

(5) Operational Law Attorney, U.S. Joint Forces Command, Standing Joint Forces HQ Unit, Norfolk, VA.

Commander Yee retired from the Navy on December 31, 2008 after twenty-three years of service. He is authorized to wear the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, as well as numerous other personal and unit medals and ribbons.

From 1997 to 2009, concurrently as a JAGC reservist, Hermen was a civilian attorney, practicing as:

(1) In-house counsel, Bridgewater State Hospital, representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in civil mental commitment hearings and Counsel for MA Department of Correction in state and federal courts;

(2) Assistant Attorney General, Attorney General’s Office, Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division of the Public Protection Bureau, Boston, MA;

(3) Claims Representative, The Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions, Inc. (“RMF”), Cambridge, MA, (captive insurance carrier for the Harvard affiliated physicians and hospitals); and

(4) Corporate Counsel, RMF, Cambridge, MA.

Hermen was born in Hong Kong (BCC) and grew up in LA, CA. Hermen holds black belts in Shito-ryu (USA) and Shorin-ryu (Japan) styles of karate, plays jazz alto/tenor saxophones, runs (Boston/USMC marathons), dives (SCUBA certified), and is a 2/0 in Cantonese.
