Edward Fishman covers a range of issues related to Europe and Eurasia on the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff. He also leads the Staff’s work on economic sanctions, long-range strategic planning, and international order and norms.

Prior to joining the Policy Planning Staff, he was the lead expert on Europe-related sanctions issues in the State Department’s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs and previously a member of the Iran sanctions team. Outside the State Department, he has served at the Pentagon as special assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and at the Treasury Department as special assistant to the Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. Before entering government, he was an editor at Foreign Affairs and published articles in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and other outlets. He holds a B.A. in History from Yale University and an M.Phil. in International Relations from the University of Cambridge.
