Alexandra (Alex) Costello is the Chief of Staff for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) at the Department of State. In this role she serves as senior advisor to the Assistant Secretary on policy, public affairs, congressional relations and overall strategy for the bureau. Before joining INL, Alex was the Director for Senate Affairs in the Bureau of Legislative Affairs at the State Department. In this capacity, she was responsible for managing the Department's relationship with the Senate on policy, nominations, and treaties.
Prior to joining the State Department in 2013, Alex served on the personal office staff of then-Senator John Kerry (D-MA) for 9 years. Alex was the Senator’s Political Director as well as the primary domestic policy advisor on issues including, but not limited to, appropriations, transportation, immigration, economic development, education and workforce. Alex also served as judiciary counsel; responsibilities included staffing for two Supreme Court Justice nominations, as well as establishing a judicial selection committee to assist the Senator in filling Federal District Court vacancies.
Before her time on Capitol Hill, Alex worked in media consulting at Murphy Putnam Media and for the Richard Gephardt for President Campaign. Alex earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland, College Park in Government and Politics and her Masters of Arts in Congressional and Presidential Studies from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
