Virginia Bennett is a career Senior Foreign Service Officer and is currently Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. From 2011-2014, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece. Prior to her tenure in Greece, she served as Deputy Executive Secretary of the U.S. Department of State under Secretary Clinton. She also served as Executive Assistant and Chief of Staff to Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte.

In addition to serving in Athens, Ms. Bennett has served at U.S. Embassies in Bogota, Tokyo, and Manila; in New York City at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations; and in Washington DC in the State Department's Operations Center, and in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

Ms. Bennett speaks French, Spanish, and Japanese. She graduated from Wellesley College, and has a Master of Business Administration degree from Cornell University.
