SICA-U.S. Statement on Haiti and Chile

Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs
May 7, 2010

The nations of Central America and the United States of America are deeply saddened by the catastrophic consequences of the earthquakes that struck Haiti on January 12 and Chile on February 27. In particular, we mourn the tremendous loss of life and are deeply saddened by the displacement of so many persons from their homes. We express our profound condolences to the Governments and people of Haiti and Chile and declare our solidarity with all of the people affected by these disasters.

We reaffirm our support for the Government of Haiti’s reconstruction plan; for a roadmap for building a new Haiti with a vibrant private sector, accountable and effective government institutions, and international partners that will work with Haiti.

Recognizing the importance of sovereignty, we express our support for the continuation of coordinated and long-term international efforts in the relief and reconstruction under the leadership of the Government of Haiti.

As Chile continues its efforts to rebuild, we offer our resolute support for its Government and people. We commit our support for the committed, long-term efforts to reconstruct and strengthen the Chilean economy and infrastructure and express our solidarity with the people of Chile as they move forward through this difficult time.
