CANDIDATE: Stephen Michael Schwartz

Stephen Michael Schwartz, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Counselor, currently serves as Director, Office of Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Island Affairs in the Department of State, a position he has held since August, 2015. Having served extensively in key leadership positions at missions overseas and in Washington, D.C., he is known as a talented manager and consensus builder with significant experience in Africa, including as Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassies in Zambia and Mauritius. Mr. Schwartz will bring key skills to the tasks of promoting democratic values, improving security, and advancing U.S. economic interests in Somalia, a critical, but unstable nation in the Horn of Africa.

Previously, Mr. Schwartz served in the Department as Director, Office of West African Affairs (2013-2015), Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Lusaka, Zambia (2010-2013), and Deputy Director, Office of Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands (2008-2010). Prior to that, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Port Louis, Mauritius (2004-2007), Political Officer, U.S. Embassy Pretoria, South Africa (2001-2004), and Political-Economic Officer, U.S. Interests Section Havana, Cuba (1999-2001). Mr. Schwartz also served in Washington D.C. as Special Assistant, Under Secretary for Political Affairs (1998-1999) and twice as Desk Officer, Office of East African Affairs (1996-1998 and 1994-1995). His earlier assignments also included serving as Political Officer, U.S. Embassy Nairobi, Kenya, General Services Officer, U.S. Embassy Bujumbura, Burundi, and Consular-Political Officer, U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Before joining the Foreign Service, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon and as a Peace Corps Country Desk Officer in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Schwartz earned a B.S. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1980, a M.A. from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies in 1988, and a M.S. from the National Defense University, National War College in 2008. He is the recipient of numerous honor and performance awards. He speaks French and Spanish.
