CANDIDATE: Jennifer Zimdahl Galt

Jennifer Zimdahl Galt, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou, China, a position she has held since 2012. As the leader of one of the largest U.S. Consulates in the world, with over 450 employees, Ms. Galt has demonstrated outstanding leadership, strong interpersonal and mentoring skills, and a keen understanding of public diplomacy and U.S. policy priorities in Asia, a background that will serve her very well in Mongolia.

Previously, Ms. Galt served in the Department of State as Senior Advisor in the Bureau of Public Affairs (2011-2012), Public Affairs Advisor at the U.S. Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Brussels, Belgium (2010-2011), and Deputy Director, Office of Public Diplomacy, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, (2008-2010). She also served as Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate General Shanghai, China (2003-2007), Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy Beijing, China (2000-2003), Assistant Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate General Mumbai, India (1997-2000), and Information (Press) Officer, American Institute in Taiwan in Taipei (1994-1997). She studied Mandarin Chinese at the Department’s Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia and Taipei, Taiwan (1992-1994). Her first assignment after joining the United States Information Service as a Foreign Service Officer was as Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy Belgrade, Yugoslavia (1989-1992).

Ms. Galt earned a B.A. from Colorado College, a M.A. from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a M.S. from National Defense University. She has won numerous awards from both the Department of State and earlier from the United States Information Agency. She speaks Mandarin Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish and Serbo-Croatian.
