CANDIDATE: Peter F. Mulrean

Peter F. Mulrean, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Counselor, currently serves as Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland where – as previously in Kabul, Afghanistan – he manages a diverse portfolio across many agencies. Known as an expert on the Balkans, the Mid-East, post-conflict reconstruction and U.S. humanitarian assistance, he will bring proven leadership and interpersonal skills to the task of furthering bilateral relations with the government of Haiti, a crucial U.S. ally in the Caribbean.

Mr. Mulrean served as State Department Director, Interagency Provincial Affairs, U.S. Embassy Kabul, Afghanistan (07/2011-07/2012), Counselor for Refugee and Migration Affairs, U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland (08/2008-06/2011), Regional Director, Middle East Partnership Initiative, U.S. Embassy Tunis, Tunisia (08/2004-07/2008), Deputy Director, Office for the Promotion of Human Rights and Democracy, Department of State, (08/2002-07/2004), Deputy Political Counselor, U.S. Mission to the European Union, Brussels, Belgium (08/1999-07/2002) and Exchange Diplomat, European Commission, Brussels, Belgium (08/1998-07/1999). He also served at the U.S. Embassy, The Hague, The Netherlands, in the Office of the Coordinator for East European Assistance, Department of State, at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India and the Consulate General Zagreb in the, then, Yugoslavia. Before that, he was an English Teacher, Language Institute of Japan, Odawara, Japan, English Teacher, Chengdu University of Science and Technology, Chengdu, China and a Peace Corps Volunteer English Teacher in Khenifra, Morocco. He worked for Baybanks Systems, Inc. in Waltham, Massachusetts and Chubb and Son, Inc. in New York, New York.

Mr. Mulrean earned a B.A. from Harvard University in 1981. He has been the recipient of numerous Department of State Senior Foreign Service Performance Awards, Superior Honor Awards and Meritorious Honor Awards. Mr. Mulrean speaks French, Dutch and Serbo-Croatian.
