CANDIDATE: Kathleen Ann Doherty
Kathleen Ann Doherty, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy, Rome, Italy. A proven leader and manager, she is known as an excellent public speaker with broad knowledge of economics and European institutions. With strong interpersonal skills and conflict resolution experience, she will advance bilateral relations with the government of Cyprus, a strategic U.S. partner in Southern Europe.
Previously, Ms. Doherty served in the Department of State as Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (2011-2013), Director, Office of European Regional and European Union Affairs (2010-2011), Economic Counselor, U.S. Embassy, London, United Kingdom (2008-2010), Economic Officer, U.S. Embassy, Moscow, Russia (2006-2008), Senior Watch Officer, Operations Center (2005), Economic Officer, U.S. Embassy, Rome, Italy (2000-2004), Special Assistant, Office of the Deputy Secretary of State (1998-2000), Economic Officer, Office of International Finance and Development (1996-1998), Economic Officer, U.S. Consulate, Sao Paulo, Brazil (1992-1994) and Consular Officer, U.S. Embassy, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (1990-1992). Before joining the Foreign Service, she was a free-lance writer for American Banker, The Potomac News, The Washington Post, Business and Health Magazine and The Naisbitt Group.
Ms. Doherty earned a B.A. in Political Science, Colgate University, Hamilton, New York in 1985, a M.Sc. in Comparative Political Systems, London School of Economics, London, United Kingdom in 1990 and undertook a one-year Economic course at the Foreign Service Institute, Department of State, Arlington, Virginia in1995. She is the recipient of the State Department Rockwell Schnabel Award and numerous Department of State Superior Honor, Meritorious Honor awards and Senior Performance Pay Awards. She speaks Italian, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese.
