CANDIDATE: Hans G. Klemm
Hans G. Klemm, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of Management at the Department of State, a position he has held since January, 2015. His Washington and overseas assignments, including as Ambassador to Timor-Leste, have demonstrated his extremely broad range of experience, managerial and policy skills, and leadership ability, all qualifications that would serve him well as Ambassador to Romania.
Previously, Mr. Klemm served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department’s Bureau of Human Resources (2012-2015). Before that, he was Senior Coordinator for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (2012), and Coordinating Director for Rule of Law and Law Enforcement, U.S. Embassy Kabul, Afghanistan (2010-2012). He also served as the U.S. Ambassador at U.S. Embassy Dili, Timor-Leste (2007-2010). Mr. Klemm was Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs, U.S. Embassy Tokyo, Japan (2006-2007), Director and Deputy Director, Office of Career Development, Bureau of Human Resources (2004-2006), a participant in the Senior Seminar at the Department’s Foreign Service Institute (2003-2004), Director of the Office of Agricultural, Biotechnology, and Textile Trade Affairs in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (2001-2003), and Deputy Director, Office of European Union and Regional Affairs, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (2000-2001). Earlier assignments included service as an Economic Officer and as a Trade Officer in Tokyo, as an Economic Officer in Bonn, Germany, as an Economic and Consular Officer in Seoul, Korea, as a Consular Officer at U.S. Embassy Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and as an Economic Officer on the Japan Desk in Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Mr. Klemm earned a B.A. from Indiana University in 1981, and an A.M. from Stanford University in 1996. He has received numerous Department of State Senior Performance and Honor awards. He speaks Japanese and German.
