CANDIDATE: Brent Robert Hartley

Brent Robert Hartley, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Counselor, currently serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs at the Department of State. Mr. Hartley is well known as an expert on European affairs, the focus of much of his three-decade career. A talented leader, consensus builder and manager, with broad experience in managing the interagency process, Mr. Hartley will bring essential skills to the task of advancing bilateral relations with the Government of Slovenia, an important U.S. ally and partner in both NATO and the EU.

Mr. Hartley earned a B.A. in U.S. History and International Relations at Hampshire College, Amherst, Massachusetts in 1979 and a Masters in National Security Studies from the National War College, Washington, D.C., in 2003. He is the recipient of two Senior Foreign Service Performance Awards, 11 Superior Honor Awards and four Meritorious Honor Awards from the Department of State. He has studied Italian, French, and Arabic.
