CANDIDATE: Stuart E. Jones

Stuart E. Jones, a career Foreign Service Officer, class of Career Minister, is currently Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan. He has the broad experience, deep regional expertise, and outstanding managerial, leadership and policy skills that make him an excellent choice to be the next U.S. Ambassador to Iraq. He previously served in Iraq as Deputy Chief of Mission in Baghdad (2011 to 2011), and as Governorate Coordinator for Al Anbar Province (2004), and was also Director for Iraq, on the National Security Council staff (2004-2005).

Prior to serving as U.S. Ambassador to Jordan and as Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy, Baghdad, Mr. Jones served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (2008-2010). Before that, he was assigned as Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy in Cairo, Egypt (2005-2008). Other foreign tours include: Political Counselor in Ankara, Turkey (2000-2002), and Principal Officer in Adana, Turkey (1997-2000), Legal Advisor at U.S. Embassy San Salvador, El Salvador (1990-1992) and Consular Officer in Bogota, Colombia (1988-1989). Domestic assignments include Deputy Director for European Regional Political Military Affairs, Desk officer for Serbia, and Special Assistant to the U.S. Permanent Representative at the US Mission to the United Nations.

Mr. Jones is the recipient of numerous awards including two awards for Exceptional and Outstanding Civilian Service from the Department of Defense, six Senior Foreign Service Performance Awards, and five individual and group Superior Honor Awards. He earned an AB in History from Duke University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He speaks Turkish and Spanish.
